The location: Castello District

Castello
The Castello district is located in the eastern part of Venice and has the city’s largest population of permanent residents. It was one of the first islands to be inhabited, and still retains many characteristic features of the original ways of the daily “living together” of the fishing community.
The name of the district derives from the castle that, already during the ‘800, the Doge Pietro Tribune built to fortify the city. San Pietro di Castello was certainly one of the initial core of the city.
The urbanization developed around the Arsenal thanks to the construction of houses which were occupied by those working in the surrounding area: they worked in the small and large workshops, in the granaries, in the bakeries and the big gathering department stores.
The convents of the Dominicans of San Giovanni e Paolo and the Franciscans of San Francesco della Vigna settled in the northernmost part of the sestiere. The Public Gardens and Via Garibaldi in the east were built during the Napoleonic era. The Church of San Pietro di Castello was once the cathedral of Venice until the title passed to the Basilica of San Marco in 1797. Over the centuries the church has undergone many changes.

San pietro
And while you’re in Castello do not miss the chance to visit the Arsenal, a place so important for the city’s history that an old proverb used to say “Chi vede Venezia e no vede l’Arsenal vede el manego ma no vede el bocal” (those who visit Venice but do not visit the Arsenal, see the handle but not the cup).
It is a vast territory to the north-east of the city surrounded by high crenellated walls. It was the site from which came the warships and merchant ships that brought wealth and grandeur to the Serenissima.
The walls surrounding the area of the Arsenal were so high that they could not be overridden, but low enough to blend in among the houses not to be visible from a distance; also the square towers were lower of the various towers of the town. This was dictated by reasons of military security and to preserve the secrets with which the Serenissima made solid and unbeatable vessels.
Calle della “Pegola”, Calle “Colonne” e “Corte Nova” are just some of the areas in which to find nice old ladies intent on chat sessions at the door of their home. Castello is a popular area and paradoxically it is considered suburbs. In reality it is difficult in a city like Venice to distinguish peremptorily center and surrounding areas.
Castello boasts also the record regarding public parks in Venice: here you can find the large gardens where every two years takes place the Art Exhibition of the Biennale and the pine forest of Sant’Elena, a real oasis during the summer months.
Here, only a twenty minute walk from the historic center of the city, you will discover and live in the true Venetian lifestyle. You can shop for fruits and vegetables from a barge along a canal, eat in traditional Venetian trattorias and discover unique and authentic artisan shops. In the evening, join your neighbours in a stroll down Via Giuseppe Garibaldi and stop for a Spritz, Venice favourite aperitif at one of the many small bars offering outdoor tables with fantastic views on the Canale di San Marco and the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore.
